When Marissa Mayer became the chief executive of Yahoo last year when she was five months' pregnant, some in the company might have assumed she would champion flexible hours for her staff.
Instead, Mayer took a two-week maternity leave, and recently issued a ruling that Yahoo staff will be required to work in the office, starting in June, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The internal memo, leaked widely on Tuesday, said in part: "Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussion, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home."
On Tuesday afternoon, according to the New York Times, Yahoo issued a statement in response to the uproar over the memo.
“This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home,” the statement said. “This is about what is right for Yahoo right now.”
