State police have charged an Enfield man in connection with an Aug. 25, 2012 robbery at the Webster Bank branch on Main Street in Somers.
Gregory M. Orton, 28, who is last know to have resided on Conlin Street in Enfield, was arrested and charged Tuesday with third-degree robbery and third-degree larceny, according to police. He was held on a $250,00 cash bond and appeared in Rockville Superior Court on April 30. Orton is currently being held at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield.
Orton was already being held in connection with a September 2012 bank robbery in the town of Granby where minutes after robbing Windsor Federal Savings Bank the Granby chief of police saw Orton running from the bank when the chief happened to be driving through the area in an unmarked car.
He is being held on a combined $1.75 million bond, according to the state Department of Correction website.
In the August incident in Somers, bank personnel told police that a white man in his early 20s wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, white and blue bandana covering his face, ran into the Main Street bank, jumped over the counter to the teller stations and demanded money from the tellers. The man then jumped back over the counter and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.
There was no weapon shown or implied and no bank personnel were injured.
Detectives with the Eastern District Major Crime unit and the Somers Resident State Troopers office investigated the incident and served Orton with a warrant on Tuesday, charging him with the crime, according to police.
Police were able to obtain a full confession from Orton, they said in a news release.
