This has been a really good spring. Everywhere.
To prove my point, here is a conversation I recently had at Wachusett Mountain in central Massachusetts:
Seven-year-old girl to her father, "Can I go into the trees?"
Dad (looking at nothing but snow), "Well, yeah."
There was so much snow in the woods - just off most of the trails - at the mountain that there was no need to worry about what her skis might run over. It was pure bliss in the trees.
Then there were the trails.
Last March was, well, challenging. Even during a season when we had epic snow, it became warm and it rained, hard, and washed out what was a promising spring season.
This year, the nights have been chilly and there have been no 60ºF days. This means, of course, that it is great for the snow.
So there we were, skiing on stuff I had not been on in three years, The Salamander Cutoff, Roper's Road and Balance Rock, and just off the trails were inviting fall lines in the trees that left one mesmerized.
Wachusett is featuring 18 trails and five lifts, but along each trail are cool little nooks full of snow.
After a quick stop at the Bullock Lodge for a trademark Apple Cider doughnut and it was back to the snow. It was a complete spring day with mid-winter conditions.
The mountain will be open daily through Saturday, April 6, until 8 p.m. The last day is Sunday, April 7, until 4 p.m.
