A new study by Consumer Reports shows that arsenic is present in many rice products found on grocery store shelves. It follows the magazine's January report finding arsenic in apple and grape juice products as well.
A few of the 200-plus rice products that were found to contain some arsenic — a known carcinogen — are marketed as organic or promoted to "gluten-free" consumers, the magazine reported.
Some pediatricians are now suggesting that parents limit their children's consumption of rice because of the findings.
"I think a prudent position for the next few months or years ... is that parents avoid rice or at least avoid any rice that comes from Texas, Louisiana or Missouri, and when in doubt go with barley or oatmeal," Dr. Philip Landrigan, a professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital School of Medicine, said on CBS' "This Morning."
It seems that reports of toxins in foods arrive almost daily. Some are recalls that address contamination in specific batches of products, but others warn of long-term consequences for eating foods previously considered safe.
