A 20-year-old Enfield man remains in critical condition after he fell while hiking at the Tariffville Gorge recreation area Wednesday night.

Police said Nicholas Yount, 20, of Enfield was walking with a friend on Tariffville Road near the Bloomfield town line, on their way to go hiking, when he fell nearly 150 feet.

The pair had stopped walking to throw some rocks near the edge of a cliff when Yount lost his footing and fell, police said.

Yount's friend placed a 911 call which was first picked up by Simsbury Police due to the location of a nearby cell phone tower, Bloomfield Police said. Emergency personnel from both towns arrived at the scene and located Yount who had sustained serious injuries.

Yount suffered from compound fractures of his limbs and open wounds, as well as internal injuries. He was transported by helicopter to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford Wednesday night where he remains in critical condition, police said.

Bloomfield Police, Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department, and Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance responded to the incident. Simsbury Police, Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company, and Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance assisted at the scene.
