The trend is this: More and more states are allowing residents to cast a vote early or to vote by absentee ballot without having to give a reason. Estimates are that fully one-third of voters across the country could cast their ballots before Election Day this year.
In Connecticut, voters can only apply for an absentee ballot if they meet one of these criteria:
- Active service in the Armed Forces of the United States
- Absence from the town during all of the hours of voting
- An illness
- Religious tenets forbid secular activity on the day of the election, primary or referendum
- Duties as a primary, election or referendum official at a polling place other than my own during all of the hours of voting
- A physical disability
The Associated Press reported this week that Michelle Obama has already cast her vote and that President Obama will cast his in Illinois on Oct. 25. The Romney campaign is also encouraging people who don't always vote to get out and cast their ballots early.
Should Connecticut join other state in allowing early voting?
