A New York woman was arrested Thursday night in connection with an attempt to pass a counterfeit traveler's check at the Home Depot store in Enfield.

Ashley L. Carson, 28, of Brooklyn, NY, was charged with first-degree forgery, forgery of symbols and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny. She was held in lieu of $10,000 bond, and was arraigned Friday in Enfield Superior Court.

Around 9:30 p.m., Carson attempted to buy power tools and other items with a $100 traveler's check. The clerk said "it didn't look and feel right," Deputy Police Chief Gary Collins said.

An extra-duty police officer working at the store also had suspicion about the check, and detectives determined it was in fact counterfeit, Collins said.

Carson was found to be in possession of a total of seven fake checks, each in the amount of $100, Collins said.

Home Depot has reported similar situations in other locations recently, including Manchester, the deputy chief said.

Carson is scheduled to return to court Nov. 8.
