In New York City and elsewhere, some restaurants are now printing "suggested" tipping amounts at the bottom of the receipt.
If your bill was $89, for example, the suggested tips would say 15 percent = $13.35, 18 percent = $16.02, and 20 percent = $17.80. Some restaurants offer "suggestions" up to 25 percent.
It isn't clear whether the receipt addendum cropped up because some customers struggle with the math or because the restaurant is "suggesting" that tips are now typically higher than they used to be.
How do you handle tips? Do you look at the total bill, or do you look at the bill before sales tax? What calculations do you go through before deciding on a tip, and how much is based on the quality of the service?
