Patch's Poll: How Much Do You Help Your Kids with Their Homework?

Homework.

As competition continues to increase for spots in top colleges and schools work to teach a more challenging curriculum, the pressure may be growing for parents to step in and help a student with homework assignments.

But some experts say that "helping" is sometimes more of an excuse for parents to actually do the work. By seventh grade, according to Madeline Levine, author of “The Price of Privilege” and featured in the documentary “Race to Nowhere,” parents should pretty much stay out of it and let kids learn by making their own mistakes.

“I asked a head engineer at NASA recently how his young American employees were stacking up against those from other countries, and he told me that they’re every bit as talented — but they lack perseverance. They’re the first ones to knock on his door and ask for help. They don’t know how to solve problems,” Levine told the New York Times.

Do that sound reasonable? What if a child asks for your help?
