A small bit of Enfield history came down Wednesday, as workers removed a flagpole that had been situated on the roof of the Thompsonville Fire Department for nearly three-quarters of a century.
The flagpole has been on top of the Pearl Street firehouse since 1939, but has been deteriorating and in danger of collapsing, said Deputy Fire Chief Paul Nabors.
Additionally, an OSHA inspection determined the flagpole was too close to a parapet, necessitating its removal.
A new flagpole has been mounted on the side of the building. A spotlight will shine on the flag at night, Chief Frank Alaimo said.
"It's kind of a sad day to see it come down," Alaimo said.
