Patch's Poll: Which of Obama's Post-Newtown Proposals Should Be the Top Priority?

President Obama has called for universal background checks, amid other gun control measures.

President Obama proposed a sweeping set of measures on Wednesday to curb what he called "an epidemic of gun violence in this country."

The president's efforts face an uphill battle in a divided Congress, with many Republicans condemning his plan as an attack on the Second Amendment. Democrats in rural or conservative states also tend to be lukewarm on any gun restrictions.

The main proposals include, according to the Washington Post, "universal background checks for all gun buyers, a crackdown on gun trafficking, a ban on military-style assault weapons and a ban on ammunition magazines holding more than 10 bullets."

The president's announcement — coming just more than a month after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that left 20 young children and six educators dead — also includes a proposal for $150 million to help communities hire 1,000 new school resource officers.

Which of these priorities, if any, seems the most important to you?

Take our poll and tell us in the comments.
